Orange County is the fifth-most populous county in the state of Florida. Over a million people live in this county, which contains the major city of Orlando and holds it as the county seat. It is the central county of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The total area of Orange County is approximately 1,000 square miles.
A Brief History of Orange County
Our county was established in 1824 from parts of Escambia and St. Johns counties. It was originally named Mosquito County, but the name was changed to Orange County in 1845 at the same time that Florida because a U.S. state. Both Mosquito County and Orange County drew their names from the large citrus groves in the area. Unfortunately, many of these groves were decimated in 1985 and 1986 when the area experienced an extreme drop in regular winter temperatures to freezing conditions. It was this economic setback that compelled one of the largest Florida producers, Tropicana, to relocated elsewhere.
Orange County Today
These days, Orange County contains the following cities: Apopka, Bay Lake, Belle Isle, Edgewood, Lake Buena Vista, Maitland, Ocoee, Orlando, Winter Garden, and Winter Park, as well as the towns of Eatonville, Oakland, and Windermere. A number of other census-designated places and unincorporated towns are also located here.
